The basic function of lighting is to extend the hours in the day. Recent developments in lighting technology have encouraged us to look at how light sources are used as an integral part of the overall design, first in our homes and now in our gardens. The wider choice of products available lately, especially energy-saving and compact models, has made the addition of lighting to the garden both practical and affordable, and the increased use of lighting in public spaces has provided inspirational examples of how light can enhance or completely alter the appearance of buildings and structures. Increasingly, we see the garden as an extension of our indoor living space, and introducing lighting there will not only extend the time you can spend outdoors but will also give it a quite different appearance. Outdoor lighting can be more dramatic than interior illumination because most gardens are larger than any room. In addition to providing a visual panorama in the garden, lighting changes the way that an outdoor space is used. Entertaining on the patio or around the swimming pool, or just enjoying the expanse of the night sky overhead, become priorities when the weather warms up.
